There can be no doubt that full-time ministry was not meant to be a stress-free occupation! Giving leadership in a congregation is about working with people, their hopes and aspirations, their needs and foibles, their strengths and passions. it is about helping a group of people to discover what they are called to do and who they are called to be. Such a process is never easy.

Burnout in Church Leaders is based on a 1996 NCLS Leader Survey, carried out in conjunction with the 1996 National Church Life Survey. The leader survey was designed to evaluate the levels of stress and burnout being felt by church leaders, and identify some of the sources of that stress. it asked leaders to identify ways in which clergy are creatively coping with stress and reducing levels of burnout for themselves.

The survey was carried out among senior ministers/pastors/priests across Anglican and Protestant denominations in Australia (see Appendix 1 for details). The Catholic Church carried out a similar survey as part of the Catholic Church Life Survey. While this is not part of the core research base for this publication, where possible, relative data on Catholic priests has been included.

Many studies of burnout here and overseas have relied on surveys of leaders in isolation from solid data on the congregations of which they are a part. Yet leaders do not lead in isolation, and stress does not arise out of a vacuum. Leaders live as parts of congregational systems.

Burnout is a subtle and complex issue, and it is impossible to explore it completely via the medium of a multiple-choice social survey. However, the breadth of the NCLS means that we can develop a meaningful picture of what is going on. The factors examined by the NCLS can account for around 70% of the variation in levels of burnout found among the 4, 400 senior ministers/pastors/priests whose lives and ministries have been explored in this project.
