Understanding, Support and Spiritual Care for People with Dementia and Those Who Care for Them

This book will contribute to a better understanding of dementia and, as a consequence, assist to replace the stigma that still attaches to dementia with an educated, caring community of support.

Noel Schultz gives us the opportunity to be more confident to travel along beside the person on the journey with dementia by sharing in providing physical, psychological, spiritual, social and emotional support. Each of us should seek to reduce the dread of this disease by a new confidence that much can be done through support and medications.

This is a book by a man concerned with the whole person and with a particular interest in meeting spiritual needs. The cognitively impaired person whose brain cells are under attack remains a person, a body-mind-spirit-soul entity. It is up to all of us to modify our reactions and behaviours to prevent people with dementia becoming excluded from the social groups that have previously shaped and supported their lives.

Faith and social communities, as well as aged-care staff, will find this book a great asset in understanding the world of someone who has dementia and in supporting them and their families. Forgetting But Not Forgotten encourages us in attitudinal change so that we are enabled to ensure that people with dementia remain valued and loved members of our communities.

Noel C Schultz, MA DMin, is an ordained minister of the Uniting Church in Australia with postgraduate degrees in psychology and pastoral theology. He has co-authored five books and many articles in professional journals on support for carers. He has been a speaker at national and international conferences. He has conducted numerous workshops on the provision of spiritual care for people with dementia and their carers.
