What is the Revised Common Lectionary?
At the 1997 Convention of the Lutheran Church of Australia, Synod adopted the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) for use in the LCA beginning in Advent 1998 (year A), and asked the Commission on Worship to release the list of readings for it.
The RCL is a revision of the three-year lectionary which has been used in some form by virtually all liturgical churches in the USA and Australia (including the LCA) for a number of years. Different churches have used variations of the lectionary, and it has attracted a number of criticisms. The form the LCA has used was taken (with slight changes) from the American Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) - which differed in some respects from the forms used by other Australian churches.
